Ark Energy and Energys will discuss their real-world hydrogen fuel cell project at TruckShowX, Australia’s largest-ever transport decarbonisation event.

Ark Energy is a renewable energy company specialising in wind, solar, battery storage, and green hydrogen. Its SunHQ Hydrogen Hub in Townsville, Queensland, currently under construction, will involve a one-megawatt  polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser producing green hydrogen from a behind-the-meter connection to the co-located Sun Metals solar farm.

SunHQ will be one of the largest fully integrated, green hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Australia and will power a fleet of five 140-tonne rated Hyzon Motors fuel cell electric trucks (FCET) operating between the Sun Metals zinc refinery and the Port of Townsville.

“Hearing from all sides of the connected ecosystem that brings together stakeholders and technologies looking to make trucking decarbonisation a reality has always been the primary goal of TruckShowX 2024,” Adam Ritzinger, HVIA Chief Technical Officer and TruckShowX Technical Program Manager, says.

“Renewable energy generators and energy infrastructure suppliers are key parts of that ecosystem, and we are very pleased to feature an ambitious and ground-breaking hydrogen case study from Ark Energy and Energys in the TruckShowX program.”

Daniel Krosch, Ark Energy’s Technical Manager, says the landmark project is a great example of how to decarbonise Australia’s ultra-heavy transport sector.

Krosch will be joined at TruckShowX by Ben Durrant of Energys Australia, which is providing some of the project’s hydrogen infrastructure including compression, storage, and distribution (CSD) units.

“These zero-emission trucks will replace their diesel equivalents and avoid 1,300 tonnes of CO² emissions each year,” he says.

“We’re looking forward to seeing these vehicles, which will be the largest of their type in the world, on the road in Townsville by Q3 2024.”

A spin-off of the hugely successful Brisbane Truck Show, TruckShowX will feature keynote presentations from global leaders in LZEV adoption, supported by practical case studies of local operators leading the decarbonisation effort.

Complementing this will be an expo showcasing the latest low- and zero-emissions vehicles and related technologies and, uniquely, a drive-day opportunity to get behind the wheel of the latest LZEVs.
